CBS touts new “The View” style show; creates a stir
CBS is trumping ABC’s “The View”, six to four (five if you want to include Barbara Walters, come September when the long time soap opera, As the World Turns exits the airwaves. For quite some time, many shows have been vying for that precious daytime time slot just as much as others have been going after Oprah’s spot on the schedule. While that search is still ongoing, the ATWT search has ended.
The new as yet untitled show is actually being touted as being like The View. The daytime talker will cover relevant events of the day with special focus on how it relates to mom and parenting. The executive producer is Sara Gilbert of Roseanne fame and who is currently recurring in “Hawthorne”. Co-hosting will be Julie Chen (she’ll exit “The Early Show but continue as host of “Big Brother”), Holly Robinson Peete, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Sharon Osbourne, and Leah Remini.
The show caused buzz from the moment of CBS’ official press release on July 21. As Mombian.com and many other websites noted, the CBS statement ran down the cast, stating the names of their spouses and talking about their children. However, the comment about Gilbert said only that she “lives in Los Angeles with her family.”
The reason this has created such a stir is that Gilbert is a lesbian, who with her partner has two children. Was this an oversight? No one really knows, but the next day on CBS’ website, the ‘oversight’ was corrected, though that hasn’t stopped the buzz from continuing.
Having beat out competition that included an Emeril Lagasse cooking show and another version of the popular Pyramid game show, this new View-like program will probably begin airing sometime in October.
