Jason Mamoa to Star in Netflix’s ‘Frontier’; Also ‘Better Call Saul’ News
Jason Mamoa, the actor most known for playing Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones and the leading role in DC’s upcoming Aquaman movie, has been announced as the star of Netflix’s upcoming adventure drama Frontier.
As some of you may have guessed from the series’ title, Frontier is set in the 18th century during the American frontier. The series will focus on multiple perspectives of a violent war for dominance over the incredibly wealthy fur trade that occurred during a more lawless period of America’s past. It will feature relationships and conflicts between settlers, frontiersmen, Europeans and Native Americans alike and promises to be a grittier version of House of Cards.
Brad Peyton, the director of San Andreas, has also recently stepped onto the project as an executive producer alongside co-creators Rob and Peter Blackie.
Netflix has opted to test the waters with a six episode order before they fully commit to Frontier. It’s set to premiere on Netflix later next year, although, since Canadian Discovery is commissioning the series, Canadian Netflix users will have to watch it on cable or find a way around their region lock – or wait until it comes to Canadian Netflix in 2018.
AMC’s Better Call Saul Comes Back in Feburary
The hit prequel spinoff of AMC’s Breaking Bad is set to premiere its second season on February 15th.
Better Call Saul premiered earlier this year and was met with universal critical acclaim, receiving Emmy nominations for Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in Drama Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in Drama Series, and Outstanding Writing in Drama Series. At time of writing, the series still holds 100% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series currently holds the award for second highest-rated first season in history, beaten only by AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead.
For those who don’t know, the series follows James Morgan “Jimmy” McGill six years before he appears in Breaking Badas Saul Goodman. Created byBreaking Badcreator Vince Gillian, the show focuses on a lawyer who will do anything it takes to stay out of the courtroom.
The series was over three years in the making before the first ten-episode season finally premiered last February, although the second season was ordered over six months before the first aired. Also expected to run ten episodes, the second season of Better Call Saul will air on AMC at 10pm on February 15th.
Those wishing to catch-up on the series before the second season begins can purchase the season on iTunes, Amazon, Google Play or Xbox. Netflix is set to feature the series on its streaming service two weeks before the second season premieres.
