I also remember I eventually worked out a joystick technique that would put less strain on them and make them last longer. Instead of wrapping my fingers around the stick and using the strength of my whole hand to move it around, I would have my right thumb on TOP of the joystick and the four fingers of my right hand on the underside of the joystick body. This way subtle thumb movements would operate the joystick and put less strain on it.

Yeah, I played video games too much as a kid.

Yeah, I played video games too much as a kid.
My friends used to do that but it felt highly uncomfortable for me but i didn't stick with the atari long before i found newer systems and was able to afford them

Ha! There was no other system when I was growing up that was as good :) If I remember correctly, there was one competitor for the Atari 2600 in its heyday....now, I do remember my hand cramping up pretty bad after 5-6 hours of playing !

Atari, wow that was a great piece of art for me! As I was growing up, I used to hold tournaments with my buddies at our houses and teh weekend used to fly! The joystick seemed practical and comfortable, even though technology has now come a long way and today's joysticks are far better. I wish I had my console till now.
