I've recently started work on providing acronym definitions on dtvusaforum.com for DTV, Home Theater, and etc. When an acronym or abbreviation such as " HDTV " is posted, a user can move their mouse over the word for an expanded explanation or meaning and see that HDTV means High Definition Television. On browsers like FireFox and Google Chrome, you'll b able to see a small hashed underline under a acronym that has a definition.

If you would like to suggest, discuss, or make a different kind of recommendation about acronyms, please respond to this thread. :)

Our current database of acronyms and abbreviations looks like this:

That's a nice touch. Now I don't have to use my handy dandy pocket acronym dictionary;) Thanks for making the forum more user friendly.
Jay,:popcorn: you are doing a fantastic job.

Thanks for make the things here easier to everyone right now. (Because I had to search by google what each term was meant to be).

:popcorn:
Thanks. :)

Added the following today:

'cecb' => 'Coupon Elgible Converter Box'
'epg' => 'Electronic Program Guide (On Screen Channel Guide)'

I've noticed that before and I do like it. Anything to help us not have to go to another page and check a glossary or something works for me. Thanks for that feature.

I've recently started work on providing acronym definitions on dtvusaforum.com for DTV, Home Theater, and etc.
ERP = Effective Radiated Power
KW = Kilowatt
db = decibel
NM (db) = Noise Margin decibel
dbm = db compared to microvolt
TPO = Transmitter Power Output
PSIP = Program and System Information Protocol
ATSC = Advanced Television Systems Committee
NTSC = National Television System Committee (also jokingly called Never The Same Color)
PAL = Phase Alternating Line
DVR = Digital Video Recoder
PID = Packet Indentifiers
TVCT = Terrestrial Virtual Channel Table
EIT = Event Information Table
F/B = Front to Back
SNR or S/R = Signal to Noise
DTS = Distributed Transmission System

I am sure I know dozens more but the brain has stopped for the moment.

Awesome, thanks Pig!

Probably need to make at least a temp page with the list alphabetical, so it can be checked when myself and others think of one to list.

This one I just used in a post

PSA = Public Service Announcement

others that hit me:

FTA = Free To Air
EAS = Emergency Alert System
RGB = Red Green Blue
LCD = Liquid Crystal Display
FCC = Federal Communications Commission
SECAM = Sequential Color with Memory (translated from French)
CRTC = Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission
HDMI = High-Definition Multimedia Interface
VGA = Video Graphics Array
MTS = Multichannel Television Sound
AC-3 = Arc Consistency Algorithm #3
MPEG = Motion Picture Experts Group
DBS = Direct Broadcast Satellites
8VSB = 8-level Vestigial Sideband Modulation
DVB/T = Digital Video Broadcasting Terrestrial
ISDB = Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting
CC = Closed Captioning
OTA = Over The Air
YPrPb = Code where Y= Luminance, Pr is Y-Red and Pb is Y-Blue
YIQ = Code where Y=Luminance, I=In Phase chrominance and Q=Quadrature amplitude modulation
YUV = About the same as YPrPb.

On another idea, should the Acronym page also be a Glossary?
I do agree an acronym page is more important than a glossary, because you can goolge a phrase and get better results than an acronym.

=======================

Note Humor!

I think the Playboy channel does use STD = Streaming Testosterone Distribution

I've built a database sheet for these references which will sort everything automatcally.....and I'll update my original post (Here: http://www.dtvusaforum.com/forum-help-zone/2694-attention-members-we-need-your-input.html#post14221) after I've added all of the suggestions!

Again, great work! :whoo:

He he he!! The only time that would be referenced here is if someone stuck the wrong connection into the wrong plug:D
Yeah, well when Ted Olson and David Boies agree it's a matter of civil rights, the mice can lay with the lions. Well until the lions get hungry.

==========

New ones

HAAT = Height Above Average Terrain
AGL = Above Ground Level (sometimes HAGL)
AMSL = Above Mean Sea Level
FAA = Federal Aviation Administration
CDBS = Consolidated DataBase System (used by FCC)
ULS = Universal Licensing System

STL = Studio Transmitter Link
IFB = Interruptible Feedback or Interruptible Foldback

IFB is one of those that begs for a glossary, as the name means little to someone never in a TV studio.
