Will my HDTV show HD quality TV without a HD box?

Only with the built in HDTV tuner if it has one, otherwise many HDTVs are poor at reproducing SD pictures from cable/satellite boxes.

Hold on a minute, you can't always say. It depends on your cable provider, and your package. I'm currently sharing a home with Cox cable, the main TV is on a cable box. All channels are digital, some are HD. All other TV sets in the house have no box. The HDTV sets get all the locals in digital HD, and a handful of other channels are analog.
