Agreed that above ground is not as attractive. If you live in an area with a warm climate, in-ground is the way to go. But if you can only use it a few months a year, above ground is more cost effective. Also if you plan on moving, above ground can be taken down and moved.
I had a friend of mine to put an above ground pool in at her house. They kept the pool for about a year and then decided to add on to the house so they had the pool removed. In this case I would say above ground only because it is less costly and if you ever decided you no longer wanted the pool you won't have invested so much money into it. Now if you are sure you want to keep the pool as long as you have the house and your pockets can stand it go with an in ground pool.

Exactly the problem with a permanent pool - your needs may change, or the next owners may not want it, and would not consider it to add value to the home.
