I found this announcement for a new 55 inch LG TV, they do plan to review it soon. The high-end 55LW9800 is shipping now for $3,799. I believe 55 inches is the only size of this series being produced. I know the price is more than the range you are considering, but it's features are similar to what I'd be looking for in an LED TV. If you were to wait a year, you would find this TV to be in the $2000+ range.

It has passive 3-D and
full-array local dimming. For what it's worth, the 55LX9800 is the first passive 3D model to bear the THX logo for 3D certification; it's also THX-certified for 2D.

THIS IS NOT A PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION, I'm just passing along some info. I have no experience with 3D or LG TV sets (I do like my LG phone). If money were no object, I would seriously consider this TV or something like it. 3D doesn't matter much to me, but
full-array local dimming LED TV sets are better than edge-lit, and it's definitely something I would look for in an LED TV.

Something else to consider: New 2012 models are hitting the shelves right now. You should be able to find a good deal (up to 50% off) on some 2011 sets between now and February.

I would like to recommend you a LG 3D TV if you are looking for the best passive 3D TV that are LED lit. There are only a few companies who use passive 3D technology, LG, Toshiba and Vizio. However, I don't want to recommend you a Vizio because their TVs are crappy. Their TV doesn't produce good 3D pictures like Samsung or LG, and I also read a review saying their TV usually breaks down within a year and hard to fix due to parts not available in the U.S. Among the passive 3D TV manufacturers, LG is the best. Besides, it fits into your price range, including 4 pairs of 3D glasses. I think LG 3D TV is quiate affordable if you get it under 47"

Good things come to those who wait. The proof? A newer model of the near $4000 LG 55" LED TV above now sells for about $1500 with 6 pairs of glasses. LG 55" 3D LED TV

The lesson? "Early Adopters" pay way too much for their shiny new stuff.
