Regular DVDs on Blu Ray

If I get a blu ray player will my regular dvds play on it? I really would love to have a blu ray but we have so many movies already...and also I can't really afford more than a couple blu ray like specific dvds that we would want...would it ruin the player if I play a lot of regular dvds?

From what I have read, most blu rays will play regular dvds as well, but then there are some that won't. Again, that is just what I have been told. Make sure to get all the details before buying a blu ray player, and make sure are you getting one that supports the older dvds too.

Thanks for the advice...I think when I go to circuit city I will definitely talk to the sales person and see what they suggest and see if my movies will play on there...I just don't want to spend that money when I have like 100+ movies already.

I would avoid purchasing anything from Circuit City considering they are going into bankruptcy. Lets wait and see what comes of that before buying their stuff.

A blu-ray player will play your regular DVDs and even upconvert them to near hd quality for you. Make sure you get a a Profile 1.1 or 2.0 player though or you won't be able to use the cool picture in picture features on the blue ray movies.

Forget Circuit City....I will concur with jack and tell you that Blu-ray players made by well-known manufacturers (Samsung, Sony, and Panasonic, just to name a few) will play most - but not all - types of DVDs. Luckily, "standard" DVD such as the ones most of us have - factory-made, studio-licensed DVDs - will play back superbly on a Blu-ray player, and getting an HDMI cable that connects to an HD TV results in even better playback quality.

Another good feature to check for is firmware upgrades over LAN. It's much easier to update the software this way....

I'm in the same boat and it's good to know that Blu-ray players will upconvert the majority of dvds. What would be nice is if there was some site where you can check your dvds against a list just so you know what will happen when you plop the dvd into the Blu-ray player.

I totally agree with you.
Having a huge selection of DVDs and changing them to blu-ray would be an expensive thing.
so I think we need a list, where could take look to find out if these DVDs are playing in the blu-ray players.

They are mostly backwards compatible I am very sure of that. You have nothing to worry about when it comes to using your Blu Ray DVD player to play a regular DVD.
