Roku update January 2015: My Roku 2 xs is now bricked!

Today, Roku pushed an update (6.1) to both my Roku 2 XS and Roku LT. Both units locked up. I managed to get the LT working by doing a soft reset (briefly hold the reset), but soft reset didn't work for the Roku 2 XS. So I tried a hard reset: Unplug all cables except power, hold reset for 15 seconds, and then pull the power plug out. Then plug it all back in. Still bricked. It keeps cycling through the ROKU boot screen @ 480i. Tried several times and still no good.

As I write this I am waiting for online support. It's a 48 minute wait, so I suspect I am not the only one with a problem! After waiting, there was no resolution, only a promise to escalate the problem and get back to me. I think we all know what that means - I'll never hear from them. All I have is a reference # for the problem and a bricked roku 2 xs.

Anyone else have this problem? Anyone have a solution?

Still not booting, I've tried everything. And no resolution from Roku. I do hate being pushed automatic updates, I prefer to manually update after I've seen that others have no problems - for exactly this reason.

Thanks, Roku! Now I'm stuck with a bricked roku xs, and I own a bunch of games I can not play on my LT. I can't use the XS remote on the LT. And a new Roku isn't in my budget!

Try going to this web site:
Roku Forums

at the top of the page click on :

There are a couple of topics on the new 6.1 update.
There maybe some useful information there for you.
Note: I feel your pain.

Yes, I am not the only one. Hopefully Roku will repair or replace my unit.
Anyone with a similar problem go to tech support, get a case #. Then GO TO THE ROKU FORUM, REGISTER, AND post your case # and Roku serial number there.

I'm wondering why the update worked for some and not others. I didn't seem to have any problems with the update, including on my 2XS. Not even a peep. I wonder what the difference was. I wonder if they tried to load the wrong build, since that is what is different for the different models.

My LT is fine. Many with the XS are fine also... but some are complaining about slow menu speed and other issues. I noticed in the Roku Forums we are being asked for a serial number. This seems to have affected Roku 3, Streaming stick, and Roku2 XS - I haven't seen anyone saying they have other products with problems.

Some people are being offered replacements, but they are making them pay shipping. And still no response from Roku to me.

That is simply bad business. If you messed something up, you need to take responsibility and make it right. "Most profit in the long run." They are in danger of losing customers to Apple or Amazon for a few dollars of shipping. Dumb!!!

Some people are saying their Roku units are back, with firmware 5.5. I'm not one of them.

Quote from the forum's RokuShawnS:

Allow your LT to automatically "update." If it is able to boot to 6.1, it will do so. If not, it should return to 5.5/5.6 firmware and no longer attempt to download the update until we issue a fix. If this doesn't work, PM me your Serial Number, and I'll forward it to engineering so they can take a look at your logs.

I plugged in my XS and let it sit overnight, and it was fixed... but it was a complete reset. Had to re-register, add back the channels, and then log in or activate channels.

It's saying firmware 6.1, as is my LT. But I noticed that there is only ONE theme available on the XS (the default theme), and the "nebula" theme on the LT is the same as it was before it updated - right after the LT updated 1/14, the Nebula theme had a different background.

But whatever, my Roku XS is back.

My Roku 2 quit working for a few hours last night. It wasn't communicating with the remote at all. I even changed batteries. Then suddenly it was back. Who knows what was up with that.
