Many home theater aficionados spare no expense when it comes to their home theater systems. One example is the $35,000 PRIMA Cinema Server that allows the movie enthusiast to rent $500 (2D) and $600 (3D) movies the same day they hit the theater.
Another is a home theater custom designed by the IMAX team that runs in the range of $1 million to $2 million.
Major filmmakers test their masterpieces in a private screening room in an IMAX proprietary theatre in Santa Monica California. The at-home IMAX experience is modeled after that theater and is aimed at the "ultra-premium home theatre market."
"IMAX designs every aspect of the IMAX Private Theatre ñ from our renowned projection and sound technology to the room acoustics and theatre geometry i to work as a fully integrated solution that is optimized specifically for your home," according to the IMAX web site.
With remote monitoring 24 hours a day every day of the year, and near 5-minute response time, the IMAX team is leaving nothing to chance. At-home support is provided when necessary and constant system tuning, audio calibration and predictive maintenance is peformed regularly.
The projector system provides content in 2D and 3D with 4K resolution. The floor-to-ceiling curved screen seen in theaters is part of the package.
IMAX is offering personal introductions to the system for those interested. Initially, they will only be rolling out to theaters and select clients.
According to the Chief Audio Designer at IMAX, Denis Tremblay, the equipment used in the IMAX Private Theatre isn't tweaked to behave like cinema hardware, "it is actually cinema hardware."
