If you look at some of the on-line reviews, many will suggest that if you are already firmly entrenched in Apple products, say you have an Apple iPad and an Apple iPhone, go with Apple TV. If not, simply go with a Roku.

I guess it would depend on your own personal brand bias, as well as if you already have a lot of other Apple products. If you are heavily invested in the Apple company then by all means you can look at getting an Apple TV set up. Both are good options depending on what you want to do. Roku is good for having free channels and allowing you to do more things than just TV. They are both similar services it all depends on what you personally prefer.
