More ads coming to TV — even to one-time havens

It maybe true that TV would be more exoensive without ads, but if they are doing so well why are we paying so much more.

I never thought I would see the day when programming in the MIDDLE of the day :gramps: on network TV would be ads. Wow maybe they ad makers need to re-think the way they advertise? at this rate people will be shutting off the tube more and more.

I always wondered why there wasn't the Ad Channel, :ballchain:all ads all the time. I bet viewers would tune in.

There are several of them. Home Shopping Network (HSN), QVC and Direct Shopping Network (DSN) are three that come immediately to mind. And the viewers do tune in: These networks are absolute cash cows for their owners.

I was contracted by HSN back in the 80's. I was offered a job. I regret not taking it now. I was paid very very very well and looking back I was a fool not to work for them. All because I didn't want to live in St Pete. Which that part I don't regret.

But I too have noticed an increasing amount of infomercials on in the middle of the day. Somebody watches them, I don't. ION is slap full of them.

WEll DUH!:gramps: Silly me what was I thinking Of course there are ad channels:duh: For some reason in my mind I was thinking something else like actual ads appearing continuously all day an night, not the HSN format.

I know the infomercials are a direct result of budget cuts. I used to watch the early morning news here every Saturday and Sunday. They laid off the news anchors and replaced the news with infomercials. I contacted the TV stations and confirmed this. I've seen the same thing happen in all three states I represent.

That is indeed closer to what the article is referring to. Some of the examples that they gave were TiVo's new pause-advertisements, where links to ads are presented when you have programming paused on the DVR. I mentioned a few months back where I saw this all going: Overlays, which are now mostly used to promote the network and its programming, may soon be used much more often to present advertising for products and other services. We will also likely see more product placement. This past week there was a real obvious one... someone was drinking Miller Beer -- they even gave the beer label a close-up! :)

As viewers work to avoid commercials, that just presents more of a challenge for those who present commercials to find a way to overcome that avoidance.

This part of the article is important:
Seth Haberman, CEO of Visible World, a provider of customized TV ads whose clients include the nation's five largest cable TV operators, said viewers who would rather skip ads should realize they subsidize the cost of producing cable TV content.

"If you took out the ad support, your bill would triple or quadruple," he said. "There's no way around it."
Personally, I'd rather triple my cable bill and do away with advertising on cable/satellite television altogether, but only if they had special versions of OTA channels that complied with the no advertising on cable/satellite rule.

I suspect that the VAST majority of viewers would not agree with me on that.
